Originally known as "Bull Creek Parish", the first settlers began to arrive to this area in 1854. Nearly all of them had come from Ireland and France. They were a good class of people, honest and industrious. They were imbued with the old faith and left nothing undone to bring the blessings of religion into their rough and lonely lives. They lived in dugouts, sod houses, log cabins and finally, in comfortable homes.
The first priest to visit the settlement was Father Bernard Donnelly, who walked from Kansas City to celebrate the mass. In an early writing of J.W. McCarthy, he writes, "In the - - log cabin of Mr. and Mrs. John McCarthy, was celebrated the first Mass, which was attended by six families only, namely: Mr. and Mrs. Patrick O'Connell, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Gallivan, John (Sante fe) Dwyer, Dennis (Black) Dywer, Mr. and Mrs. John McCarthy, and Mr. Murtha Noland in 1857". "In this log cabin of Mr. McCarthy's were administered all the sacraments of the Church except Holy Orders. It was a home to all the priests and Bishops up until 1880. Strange to say, there were no deaths in the community that were not attended by a priest, for it was never too dark or cold for a young man in the congregation to go for the priest. They would ride one horse and lead another for the priest to ride on. The round trip would take two days and two nights. They would always return with the priest. Those young men were Michael Keating, John Reding, Maurice Buttinore, J.W. and Florence Jr. McCarthy."
In 1857, the families began the construction of its first church. It was built of logs, held together with wooden pins and rendered airtight by mortar forced between the logs. The men of the district worked together and built what was perhaps one of the first Catholic churches in Kansas for white people exclusively. This first log church was only 14 x 16 feet. It was located near the east side of the present cemetery and was dedicated to St. Columkil. The dedication took place in April 1858 by Fr. McGee.
A new stone church was built and dedicated in 1867, just east of the small log church. In 1870, the town of Edgerton was laid out and the railroad was built. Henceforth the settlement was known as Edgerton, but the parish boundary extended into Miami County. Father Pujos was the first resident pastor in Edgerton. The present church was built in 1893 for a cost of three thousand dollars. Father Pompency dedicated the church Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mother on the feast of Assumption, August 15, 1893. Father Dennis Fitzpatrick built the present pastoral residence at a cost of $2,646. He lived in the sacristy of the church until the new residence was finished in May of 1910. |
