Christian service is one of the hallmarks of a Catholic education. The American Bishops in the document To Teach as Jesus Did (1976) explained clearly the importance of service in a Catholic school.
More than any other program of education sponsored by the Church, the Catholic school has the opportunity and obligation to be unique, contemporary, and oriented to Christian service: unique because it is distinguished by its commitment to the threefold purpose of Christian education and by its total design and operation which foster the integration of religion with the rest of learning and living; contemporary because it enables students to address with Christian insight the multiple problems which face individuals and society today; oriented to Christian service because it helps student acquire skills, virtues, and habits of heart and mind required for effective service to others. All those involved in a Catholic school-parents, pastors, teachers, administrators, and students-must earnestly desire to make it a community of faith which is indeed “living, conscious, and active.” (#106)
Assumption Catholic School students have a strong support system for the development of students’ spiritual, personal, and academic growth. Activities, programs and service opportunities throughout the parish and school community foster a lifelong commitment of service to others.
Service to others and a development of awareness of social justice issues are an essential part of the students’ faith formation. Assumption Parish families are involved in various whole-school service projects. These include a winter clothing drive, food drives, toilet paper drive, Guild School penny drive, Lenten collection for children in Africa and the Caritas Christmas Toy collection.
Individual classrooms also take on their own class service projects. Preschool through eighth grade students provide service in many different ways. Classes are involved in
* Caring of the school grounds
* Filling Easter baskets for needy families
* Making donations to the humane Society
* Contributing to food drives
* Making cards for senior parish members
* Visiting nursing homes
* Visiting senior religious in their convent care centers
* Christmas caroling
* Service in Catholic Charity programs
* Service to Union Gospel Mission
* Collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House
